Is Google Translate accurate enough to rely on for your business?
Quick. Immediate. No cost. These are some of the reasons Google Translate remains a top choice for translation tools. It's undeniably helpful when navigating unfamiliar territories abroad.

However, its reliability wanes when tasked with translating intricate sentences. The primary reason? It lacks the sophistication to account for all nuances and contexts. This raises the question: how precise is Google Translate? And is it dependable for translating your website?

How Does Google Translate Operate?

Ever been curious about the foundation of Google Translate's database? It's predominantly based on the Europarl Corpus, a compilation of documents from European Parliament sessions that were translated by humans. Beyond that, it leans on assorted digital resources and prevalent translations for languages.

Its 2006 debut saw it employing statistical machine translation for immediate text translation. However, it soon became evident that this method had limitations. While it was adept at translating short phrases, it faltered with longer, more intricate sentences.

Recognizing the need for a shift in machine translation (MT) methodologies to enhance precision, Google, a decade later in 2016, introduced its proprietary framework: Google neural machine translation technology (GNMT). This transition marked a significant improvement in its algorithm and its translation approach. Rather than word-by-word translation, it began interpreting entire sentences.

The outcome? Translations that were considerably more accurate, even accounting for slang and colloquial terms. This shift resulted in a substantial reduction in translation errors, decreasing them by 55%-85% for numerous primary language pairs.

With this evolved learning system, Google Translate abandoned the practice of using English as an intermediary for translations. It began translating directly between two languages, such as from French to Japanese, bypassing the English translation step. This direct approach made the process quicker, more efficient, and notably, more accurate.

Is Google Translate Precise?

Although Google Translate supports over 130 languages, making it one of the most comprehensive translation tools, its accuracy varies. For instance, its proficiency in translating Spanish, one of its most utilized languages, often exceeds 90%.

Research from 2014 revealed that Google Translate's accuracy stood at 57.7% for intricate medical phrases. A 2021 study by the UCLA Medical Center determined that Google Translate retained the general meaning in 82.5% of translations. However, accuracy varied between languages, ranging from 55% to 94%.

At times, the precision of Google Translate is impressively high. Our internal research on machine translation for website content found that 10 out of 14 translation editors were pleasantly surprised by the translation quality they reviewed. This indicates that machine translation often surpasses expectations.

It's essential to note that Google Translate excels when translating literary texts into English. However, it struggles with informal phrases, achieving only a 72% accuracy rate when translating casual English texts into other languages. This can lead to peculiar translations, especially when attempting to convert everyday expressions.

Is Google Translate Suitable for Website Translation?

Efficiency is paramount. Not every business has the resources or time to entrust extensive content to human translators. This is where machine translation proves invaluable.

Machine translation has evolved significantly since its inception in the 1950s. With advancements in deep learning and neural machine translation (NMT), it's more reliable than ever. Yet, given the fluid nature of language, it's not flawless.

English translations are a strong suit for Google Translate. A 2013 study evaluating its accuracy in extracting data from non-English sources found that translated articles typically took longer than English ones.
In our research, translation editors noted that if the MT couldn't discern the context for a specific term, it provided a generic translation. This often led to inaccuracies due to the lack of context. However, isn't the same true for human translations when context is missing?

The underlying reason is straightforward: Google Translate's accuracy hinges on the data volume available for the target language. Given that nearly 60% of websites are in English, Google Translate has a vast reservoir of data. This explains its high accuracy for English language pairs. Conversely, with only 2% of web pages in Portuguese, its Portuguese translations might not be as precise.

Despite a language having limited online representation, there might still be significant demand. 73% of online consumers prefer product reviews in their native language. For businesses aiming to expand internationally, catering to the linguistic preferences of your target audience is crucial. Website localization ensures your message resonates and nothing is lost in translation.

In essence, Google Translate's proficiency is contingent on its user base, especially those enhancing its translation quality. The more data it receives, the better its output. While it's a handy starting point for website translations, it's most effective when combined with other translation tools and, crucially, human oversight.

Are There Translation Tools More Precise Than Google Translate?

Several renowned translation tools, such as DeepL, Amazon Translate, and Microsoft Translator, leverage machine learning to refine their services. DeepL utilizes Linguee's vast database of manually translated content, given both were developed by the same entities. Amazon's service is built on neural networks designed for translating between source and target languages. Similarly, Microsoft Translator employs NMT for its translations.

Our research discovered that DeepL, which employs a similar machine translation approach as Google Translate, had the fewest unacceptable translations for Italian. However, it also required the least human intervention for the same language. While DeepL supports only 28 languages, it excels in Spanish translations.

Conversely, Amazon Translate, which was the least effective MT engine in our study, surpassed its rivals in delivering the highest number of untouched translations in French. It also had the fewest unacceptable translations in Simplified Chinese and supports a commendable 75 languages.

Microsoft Translator, with support for 111 languages, showcased consistent performance. It excelled in German translations but lagged in Portuguese.

All these tools demonstrated proficiency with European languages and, from a human editing perspective, delivered high-quality Arabic translations. In summary, no single translation software outshines the rest; they are most effective when used collectively.

Should You Opt for Google Translate?

Despite its limitations, Google Translate remains a valuable tool, potentially saving significant time and money for website translations. Its accuracy largely depends on the content's intent, style, and the recipient's interpretation. For brief, straightforward phrases, it's more than adequate.

Google Translate proves beneficial for:

  • Editing low-visibility content, like website footers.
  • Guiding users to essential information for resolving basic issues.
  • Product reviews, where comprehensive feedback isn't expected.

However, it might not be suitable for:

  • Everyday expressions needing more context or lacking an exact counterpart in the target language.
  • Using it as a dictionary for individual words, risking misinterpretation.
  • Translating content that doesn't adhere to standard grammatical rules in its language or has syntax dissimilar to the target language, such as Spanish to Korean.
  • Translating sarcastic or ironic expressions.

In situations where translation quality can significantly impact the message's tone and delivery, integrating professional translation into your website translation process is advisable.
